Geocaching: Caching in NYC

Nice view: Lakeside View Cache, Central Park

Central Park Guardian

Jo and I just got back from an excellent trip to the tourist mecca, staying 4 days in midtown Manhattan. We spent 1/2 day in the middle of Central Park (about 70th Street or so) caching....... and then, of course, did the uber-tourist cache: Times Square Webcam Cache:

Golf Course Review: Chelsea Piers, New York City

Course: Chelsea Piers, NY, NY

Cost: $20/hour
When: Saturday, September 17th, 2005.
Who: Sean, Jo
Our Score: N/A (Driving Range only, duh)

Review:
- Look and Feel: Very nice carpet fairways, and well maintained, nice fake carpteted greens. 4-story tee boxes. Have fun trying to hit 200 foot yachts with your 300-yard drives.
- Amenities: Best driving-range view in the world (as far as I know). Just a *couple* of restaurants nearby.
- Other: Watch out for falling hammered golfers.
- Playspeed: Good (100 balls in one hour)

Recommendation: Desperate-for-green-space Manhattanites only. Not much variation. Night play available. No caddies.

Chess: Kelly v. Kromer

Rochester Chess Center, September 19th, 2005
1-0
Slightly boring, even game all the way through. Had a hallucination on move 34 that dropped a piece, and I promptly resigned.

Golf Course Review: Parkview Fairways , Victor, NY

Course: Parkview Fairways, Victor, NY
Event: 4th Annual Paychex Clam Bake Open
Cost: $37 with cart
When: Saturday, September 10th, 2005.
Who: Sean, Nick
Our Score: 81 (It was a 2-man scramble, mind you.)

Review:
- Look and Feel: Very nice fairways, and well maintained, multi-tiered greens. Only complaint that it being a new course (6 years or so), it is still *very* open in places, with the trees not yet grown up.
- Amenities: Simple, but nice, clubhouse with the usual hots and burgers and beer.
- Other: Cart paths need quite a bit of work.
- Playspeed: OK (4.5 hrs for 18 holes)

Recommendation: Nice, enjoyable course, with friendly staff, and interesting holes.

Golf Course Review: Ravenwood, Victor, NY

Course: Ravenwood, Victor, NY
Cost: $60 with cart for 18.
When: Monday, September 5th, 2005.
Who: Nick, Sean, Jeff
My Score: 95

Review:
- Look and Feel: Great layout with major elevation changes, lots of water, and 70(!) sand traps, most of which I found today. Fast, huge greens, very, very well maintained..
- Amenities: GPS-enabled carts with full graphic representation of each hole. Nice clubhouse and pro shop.
- Other: Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Extremely grumpy beverage cart operator.
- Playspeed: Good (Less than 4.5 hrs for 18 holes)

Recommendation: Excellent, albeit pricy.
